About Us

The Amesbury History Centre is the home of more than ten thousand years of human stories offering visitors a clear and engaging introduction to the extraordinary heritage of the town and its surrounding landscape. Situated in the heart of Amesbury the Centre provides a welcoming space where people can explore the long and remarkable history of what is believed to be the longest continuously inhabited settlement in Britain.
The Centre itself stands on the former site of Melor Hall which was a building long used for community events before being replaced by the purpose-built structure that houses the exhibitions today. Archaeological investigations carried out before construction revealed further traces of Amesbury’s deep past, adding to the growing collection of local history materials. Inside the Centre exhibitions are designed to be accessible and engaging with displays that appeal to both casual visitors and those with a deeper interest in archaeology and local heritage. Artefacts, reconstructions, photographs, and interpretation panels guide visitors chronologically through the area’s development while knowledgeable volunteers are always on hand to answer questions and share insights.
In addition to its exhibitions the Amesbury History Centre acts as a lively community hub. It hosts talks, educational workshops, family activities, and special events throughout the year, helping to connect people with the past in meaningful and enjoyable ways. The café and shop offer a friendly place to relax and browse locally inspired gifts, books, and crafts. As a charitable organisation, the Centre relies on local support and visitors are encouraged to become members, volunteer, or contribute to ongoing projects that help preserve and promote Amesbury’s heritage.
Today, the Amesbury History Centre plays an important role in telling the story of a town whose roots reach back to the earliest chapters of human settlement in Britain. By combining archaeology, community engagement, and accessible storytelling, it ensures that the history of Amesbury continues to be explored, understood, and shared with future generations.
